New York Anime Fest 2009

I will be attending New York Anime Fest for the first time as press!  Super Amazing Number One will be updated September 25-27 as I sit and learn all about what's new and happening in the anime industry.  I haven't decided exactly what days I'll be covering, but it will definitely include Saturday.  On that day, I will be participating in the Blogger Roundtable panel on Saturday from 8 - 9 PM!  This panel is happening thanks to the awesome blogging duet over at Reverse Thieves.

Yoshiyuki Tomino will be at the show!  Like you, I wasn't too excited either until I was informed that he's the creator of Gundam.  It will be interesting to hear what he has to say, since he just made some people angry saying that video games are evil.

Looks like AKB48 will be there.  They appear to be a famous idol group based in Akihabara.

Well I'm most likely going to cover the stuff I think is awesome.  When it comes to anime, that means giant robots.  If I have any readers, and you'd like me to cover anything specifically, please let me know!

Okay, I've looked at the schedule, and here's my tentative coverage:

Friday

  • FUNimation Industry Panel
  • Final Fantasy/Square Enix
  • Vertical
  • Aniplex
  • AMV Contest?

Saturday

  • Del Ray Manga
  • Bandai
  • Manga Entertainment
  • Anime News Network
  • Robotech: Past, Present, and Future
  • Blogger Roundtable!

It’s been too long Solty

So disk 5 of Solty Rei finally arrived in my mailbox thanks to Netflix.  It's been a few months since I watched the last disk and I was a bit confused starting out.  I still like the show and I can't wait to see how it ends.  There's a plot twist that I wasn't expecting, which is neat.  The support for the twist is pretty weak though.

I watch Solty with the English dubbing because I'm lazy.  I've started to watch my anime with dinner and it's too difficult to read the screen and try and eat my food at the same time.  Fortunately the voice actors are pretty good.  Solty's voice is definitely familiar, and one of the RUC girls I recognize as the main character from the Witchblade English dub.  The male lead, Remmy I think the character's name is, is voiced by the voice director.  His work is pretty good.  Unfortunately he thought it would be fine to cast himself as some of the filler soldiers.  Although competent, versatile in his vocal stylings he is not.

Kekkaishi makes a turn for the better

I think Kekkaishi has finally hit it's stride around episode 17.  It's finally at the point where I want to know what's going to happen next.  They've built up the world and have started to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding it.

Kekkaishi

After hearing Narutaki and Hisui say only good things about the show, I decided to give Kekkaishi a try.  Hisiu has definitely bordered on whining about why people love Bleach and not Kekkaishi.

I've made it past the 7th episode and I can probably speak to that a little.  Most shonen or anime mainly about combat/fighting are all formulaic, Kekkaishi has a fairly unique spin.  The main male character is so far in a lower position than the female lead.  He's younger, less experienced, and not as skilled.  Also, he has an unhealthy fascination with cake.  Not so much eating it as baking it.  He even wants to live in a cake castle.  I'm giving away a little joke here when Yumikura Tokine calls him a "cake otaku", which I even identified in the Japanese audio track as "cakey otaku".  Shonen shows usually have some silly aspects but stuff like Sumimura Yoshimori constantly being emasculated by Tokine and the caketaku are different.  Following that trend is his stay at home dad who cooks, cleans, and wears an apron.

So I think the feminine side of Kekkaishi makes the show on either a conscious or subconscious level unappealing to the mass audiences in America.  The show is awesome though so far, and I don't care about that stuff.  It's definitely refreshing to see a show like this that hasn't so far consisted of constipated men training to get stronger.

Sengoku Basara Licensed!

Sengoku Basara

The Two Main Characters from Sengoku Basara

I'm very excited for this news.  Apparently Funimation announced at Anime Expo. (ANN)

This is a very entertaining show about samurai.  It's one of those manly fighting shows.  It has crazy overpowered main characters, doesn't take itself too seriously, and is very bright and colorful.

I had been watching it via fansubs and I guess I'll stop now and wait for the DVDs to be released.  Now this is both good and bad.  I'm pretty sure the fansubs I had been downloading are taken from HD rips of Japanese television.  The DVDs are actually probably going to have a quality hit when compared.

Even if there was a Bluray version offered, I'd probably still go the DVD route.  Anime on DVD is already more expensive than domestic releases, and the prices I've seen on Bluray versions of Anime seem astonomical.

Eventually I guess the costs for both Bluray players and Anime on the format will come down.  Already if you want a Best Buy house brand Insignia Bluray player, they're sub $200.

Yay!

Bleach Catchup

So I think I'm caught up with the Japanese airings of Bleach.  I watched from whatever episode we're up to in the US till we get past the time travelling 'filler' season.

Bleach is still a great fighting anime show.  The cliches sometimes run a little thick, but that's expected of the genre.  The show still manages to surprise me, though I feel like they're suprises I should have seen coming.

The power creep is always amusing.  Just like similar shows in the genre, one week's main characters could easily defeat themselves from the previous week.  And by the end of a few seasons they can pretty much blow up a planet.  Dragonball->Z->GT I'm looking at you.

Can't wait to see what happens next in Bleach though.  The last time I did this I got ahead of the US airings by about half a season.  Now I'm pretty sure I'm at least 5 seasons ahead.  whoops.  I guess I can watch all those Bakki the Grappler DVDs I bought.

I give up, True Mazinger Z is Giant Robot Porn

My good friend Hisui over at Reverse Thieves assured me that True Mazinger Z, a show currently airing in Japan, was an awesome giant robot show.  I gave it a try with a few other recommendations.

I watched the first episode and was sorely dissapointed.  It was a disjointed mess with quick cuts from one unrelated scene to the next.  The episode is filled with snippets from the entire show.

I told Hisui as much and decided that I'd watch something else.  Then Hisui came back to me with the comment that TMZ is giant robot porn.  That's how good the episodes got.

So, trusting in my friend, I watched some more.  Episode 2 has a bunch of scenes from the first, but otherwise is much better.  I couldn't stop watching and got all the way through to episode 5.

The show doesn't take itself seriously, and when it starts to get a little more linear is a fun and entertaining show.

Okay, wow.

Solty Rei has really surprised me.  I'm on the third DVD, and the story is a lot more in depth than I thought it was going to be.   I don't want to say too much in case someone's reading this and hates the spoilers.

Well rounded characters, developing plot, and it's pretty.  Totally unexpected.

Amazing Title

I just finished watching Project Blue Earth SOS.  The copy I have is from ADV and consists of 6 hour long episodes on 3 DVDs in a nice 3 volume artbox.  The artbox is a little tight for the 3 cases.  I have to violently shake the box in order to get the dvd cases out.

Anyway, the show:
